Today, Helen Keller is working with partners across West Africa to promote the production of fortified bouillon cubes, a common cooking staple in African households. Last year, the Nigerian government endorsed the voluntary standards for bouillon cube fortification that Helen Keller helped develop, which could help prevent an estimated 57,000 child deaths by 2030.
Augustine Okoruwa, Regional Program Manager for Food Fortification, spoke to Devex about our collaborative approach to support fortification food production.
“The government is key, the private sector is key, civil society, research and academia, professional associations, they are all important,” he said.
On a global level, fortifying bouillon cubes with vital nutrients can help improve the diets and health of millions of people every year. According to the Gates Foundation’s 2024 Goalkeepers Report, bouillon cube fortification could also prevent 16.6 million cases of anemia each year.
