GiveWell Podcast Spotlights ‘Evidence-Backed, Cost-Effective, and Scalable’ Vitamin A Supplementation

Helen Keller Intl’s vitamin A supplementation work was recently featured on GiveWell Conversations, a twice-monthly podcast hosted by GiveWell CEO Elie Hassenfeld.

In the episode, Scrutinizing One of Our Longest-Funded Programs, Elie and Senior Researcher Stephan Guyenet examine the evidence behind vitamin A supplementation and its role in reducing child mortality.

Elie and Stephan note that while vitamin A supplementation has strong evidence showing it reduces child mortality, many of those studies are decades old, and newer data suggests a smaller effect. Nevertheless, GiveWell’s current methodology continues to reaffirm vitamin A as a highly cost-effective solution.

As they explain, “using our updated cost-effectiveness analysis, we estimate our most recent grant for vitamin A supplementation to Helen Keller Intl is 25 times more cost-effective than our benchmark.”

Since 2018, Helen Keller Intl has been one of GiveWell’s top four charities, recognized for its ability to deliver “evidence-backed, cost-effective, and scalable” programs.

Helen Keller partners with ministries of health and community health workers to deliver vitamin A to millions of children across Africa each year. For just $2, a child can receive twice-yearly doses of vitamin A, helping to strengthen vision, prevent blindness, and support a healthy immune system.
