Controlling and Eliminating Devastating but Preventable Neglected Tropical Diseases
Neglected tropical diseases affect more than 1 billion people worldwide. Despite causing a wide range of devastating conditions, including blindness, painful deformities, and undernutrition, they have historically been overlooked and received too little attention and funding.
Helen Keller Intl has decades of experience helping to control and eliminate these diseases and currently focuses on five of them: lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminths, and trachoma. Fortunately, most of these illnesses are preventable or treatable.
Working with governments, local partners, and communities, Helen Keller has helped free tens of millions of people from the threat of neglected tropical diseases. But funding cuts have now put the lives of more than 100 million people, and decades of progress, at dire risk. Without ongoing surveillance and treatment, these diseases may resurge, and millions will face preventable disabilities and lifelong health consequences.
Watch our video to learn more about the importance of continuing to invest in controlling and eliminating these blinding and disabling diseases to ensure that future generations can live a healthier, brighter future.
